Only in the Land: An official AWFC Documentary following our historic UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign – from London to Lisbon. Taking interim charge of Arsenal Women after a turbulent start to the 2024/25 campaign, Episode 1 of Only in the Land goes behind the scenes during Renée Slegers’ opening weeks as Head Coach, with everything at stake in domestic and European competition.

There were so many storylines with the players as they played the defending Champions Barcelona Women in the final. Arsenal Vice-Captain and Lionesses Captain Leah Williamson was a ball girl in the Champions league Final in 2007 when Arsenal last won the title, Arsenal Captain Kim Little was a teenager from Scotland who signed from Scotland a year later in 2008, Chloe Kelly almost quit football before Arsenal signed her in January 2025, Mariona Caldentey signed from Barcelona in the summer of 2024 was playing against her childhood club and was looking to win her 4th Champions league medal, Dutch Goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar was carrying a ongoing injury but made the final, and Alessia Russo, Lotte Wubben Moy, and Emily Fox all attended the University of North Carolina years ago together and played in the same college football team, now all playing for Arsenal as professionals on the verge of becoming all time legends for the club. We had the fiery full back Katie McCabe and Republic of Ireland Captain whom almost left the club years ago but stayed and is now part of the leadership, our Australian trio of the Matildas (Australia National team) Captain-Stephanie Catley, Caitlin Foord, and Kyra Cooney-Cross, who all had amazing journeys to get to the pinnacle of women’s football and write there own legacy and legendary paths, Kelly Smith MBE, Arsenal’s legendary striker now a assistant attacking coach at Arsenal was in the team that won the Champions League in 2007. Then finally we have our young Dutch Coach Rene Slegers who part of the Arsenal youth academy back in 2007 when Arsenal women’s Football Club won their first champions league, who was thrust into the limelight when she was chosen to become the interim coach in her first head coach position when Jonas Eidevall left the Job in late 2024 when she was the assistant coach. And then to lead the team to glory and beat the formidable, best team in the world and reigning champions Barcelona by 1 goal in Lisbon the final, showing calm, composure, calculated tactical game management through the season was a unbelievable achievement, very Hollywood film-like in it’s story, helping to grow the women’s game even more.
